In short

A deck in New York has to handle freeze-thaw winters and humid summers, and a roof deck also has to protect the roof under it. Most deck construction in NYC also needs a DOB filing. MCG Corp starts with the structure and drainage, then the boards and railings.

Deck renovation with MCG Corp

Old decks fail at the connections first: the ledger against the house, footings, and fasteners. When we renovate a deck we start there, because new boards on a tired frame will not last.

For roof decks and terraces the roof membrane comes first. We plan the deck so it can be lifted for roof maintenance and does not trap water.

What this covers

  • New backyard decks
  • Deck repair and resurfacing
  • Roof decks and terraces
  • Composite and hardwood decking

What New York adds to the job

Built for winters

Footings below frost depth, hardware rated for outdoors and drainage that does not let water sit.

Roof protection

Roof decks sit on sleepers or pedestals over a protected membrane, never fastened through it.

Permits

New decks and roof decks generally need a DOB filing and must meet railing and structural requirements.

How a project runs

  1. Walkthrough and estimate

Billy visits, measures and asks what you want the space to do. You receive an itemized written estimate, not a ballpark.

  2. Approvals and planning

Board package, landlord consent and any DOB filing are prepared and submitted. Materials with long lead times are ordered.

  3. Construction

Work runs inside your building’s hours with common areas protected and the site cleaned daily. You get updates without having to chase them.

  4. Inspections and walkthrough

Required inspections are passed, the punch list is closed with you, and the building receives its close-out paperwork.

Billy and his team did excellent work. They kept us apprised of how the work was going and asked questions of us regularly. Reasonable price. I would strongly recommend them and will be using them again if further projects arise.

Richard Lloyd, home renovation

Great work! It's a rare contractor who not only does excellent work but is exceptionally easy to work with and communicates at all stages of the job. When Billy says he and his team will be there at nine they are.

Cathe Neukum, home renovation

Billy and team are absolutely incredible. They helped us transform our apartment from something generic into something spectacular, assembling an all-star team for electrical work, stonework, painting, and tiling. They dealt diligently and patiently with our stringent condo board and all the paperwork required.

Deck renovation questions

Do I need a permit to build a deck in NYC?

Generally yes. New decks and roof decks are filed with the DOB and must meet structural and railing rules. Like-for-like repairs to an existing deck often do not need a new filing.

Composite or wood decking?

Composite costs more upfront and needs little upkeep. Hardwoods such as ipe last for decades with periodic oiling. Pressure-treated pine is the budget choice and needs the most maintenance.
