Basement renovation and finishing in NYC

Dry, insulated, well-lit basements in New York houses, built to code and planned around what the space can legally be.

In short

Before a basement in New York City is finished, two questions decide the design: is it dry, and what can it legally be used for. Moisture is solved before anything is closed in, and whether a space can be a bedroom or separate unit depends on ceiling height, light, ventilation and exits under the building code.

Basement renovation with MCG Corp

Most basement projects we see in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island are family rooms, home offices, gyms or guest space. They succeed or fail on moisture. We look at grading, drainage and the walls before talking about finishes.

If you are hoping for a rental unit, ask us early. A basement apartment has to meet specific code requirements, and many basements cannot. We will say so plainly rather than build something you cannot use.

What this covers

  • Moisture control and waterproofing
  • Framing, insulation and drywall
  • Electrical, lighting and outlets to code
  • Bathrooms and laundry rooms
  • Flooring suited to below-grade spaces
  • Home gyms, offices and family rooms

What New York adds to the job

Water first

Finishes over a damp wall fail. We address the source and install the right vapor control before insulating.

What the space can be

Habitable rooms need minimum ceiling height, light, air and safe exits. We check before design, not after.

Permits

New bathrooms, new walls and electrical work generally need DOB filings and licensed trades; we coordinate them.

How a project runs

  1. Walkthrough and estimate

Billy visits, measures and asks what you want the space to do. You receive an itemized written estimate, not a ballpark.

  2. Approvals and planning

Board package, landlord consent and any DOB filing are prepared and submitted. Materials with long lead times are ordered.

  3. Construction

Work runs inside your building’s hours with common areas protected and the site cleaned daily. You get updates without having to chase them.

  4. Inspections and walkthrough

Required inspections are passed, the punch list is closed with you, and the building receives its close-out paperwork.

Billy and his team did excellent work. They kept us apprised of how the work was going and asked questions of us regularly. Reasonable price. I would strongly recommend them and will be using them again if further projects arise.

Richard Lloyd, home renovation

Great work! It's a rare contractor who not only does excellent work but is exceptionally easy to work with and communicates at all stages of the job. When Billy says he and his team will be there at nine they are.

Cathe Neukum, home renovation

Billy and his team did my full apartment renovation on 95th St between Amsterdam Ave and Broadway. Their service was absolutely outstanding from start to finish. I am very happy to recommend MCG to others.

Basement renovation questions

Can I turn my basement into a bedroom in NYC?

Only if it meets the code for a habitable room: minimum ceiling height, natural light and ventilation, and a safe way out. Many basements do not. We check yours before planning one.

Do I need a permit to finish a basement in NYC?

Adding walls, a bathroom or electrical circuits generally requires DOB filings and licensed trades. Cosmetic work in an already finished basement often does not.
